Task: A Letter: "Coming from where I'm from."
We experience the world though different lens and so for this webquest, you will research several apartheid laws, how they changed the lives of Black South Africans and further think about how this would affect a young peson, like yourself. Then, you will write a persuasive letter to a U.S. pen-pal from the perspective of a 12 year-old Black South African. In class we will also read the letters from the perspective of black and white South Africans.
In this letter you will:
1. Describe your family life; you should include details, such as how many family members you have (at least 2) their names and ages, a brief couple of lines on family history, where you live, a little about your government, for instance who was F.W. de Klerk, where your parents work, where you are schooled and any other important details.
2. Describe three apartheid laws, such as the Group Areas Act and the South Africa Act, and how they affect your individual and family life.
3. Talk about the work of Nelson Mandela and give an idea of how you are helping him to achieve the goal of desegregation and reparations. Give yourself a name; it adds a personal touch to the letter.
4. Write with emotion. When you are finished email your letter to your QIP (Quality Inspection Partner) for editing no later than Friday, May 4th. All final letters are due in class the Friday, May 11th.
Keywords that must be in your letter: Apartheid, South Africa, Segregation, Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela, African National Congress, F.W. de Klerk, Zulu, Housa, Dutch, Afrikaner, Indian, White, Black.
Remember: your goal is to persuade and make your pen-pal understand and sympathize with the conditions in South Africa.
